Rafflesia, the rare, unique and endemic plant, is found only in four countries: Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. In Indonesia, it is only found on three islands: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan.
In order to preserve the
Rafflesia species amidst the increasing deforestation in Indonesia, it is
imperative that comprehensive and holistic research on Rafflesia is conducted
before its natural habitat further deteriorates and the species becomes
extinct. A strong and extensive research network is needed throughout the
Rafflesia habitat in Indonesia to achieve this and to unravel all scientific
mysteries related to Rafflesia. Therefore, this expedition will be conducted.
The Rafflesia expedition will last approximately 10 days and will take place 1-10 April 2024 in Berau, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The goals of the expedition are to reveal the population of Rafflesia in Berau, confirm its species, gather population data, ecological data, and ethnobotanical data, mapping the stakeholders, and collect genetic samples, living host specimens, and samples for ex-situ conservation.
This expedition is supported by Judith Heath SES Explorer Award 2023.
